"Broke Da Mouth" Kind of Day - Maui Day 5

What is Broke Da Mouth?
I'll explain later...HA!!

The advantage of being flexible
As I had mentioned earlier, we really had no itinerary. If there was something I wanted to make sure we did during this vacation, we had already crossed it off our list, that was driving the Road to Hana. Everything else was all about the beach (body boarding, skim boarding, snorkeling, and plain ol' swimming and relaxing beach front). I think we've done a pretty good job in that arena. From a local flavor stand point, I'm pretty happy with the different food crawls I've done over the past few days, and now that we've approached our halfway point of our vacation, the challenge is to ensure we hit more local, off the beaten path types of establishment.

Foodie stop
Since we planned on heading to the beach, of course I had to find something good to eat. I was advised to try 808 Deli which was just down the street from the condo. I asked for recommendations, and I followed the tip - get the Chicken Salad Sandwich with dried cranberries, walnuts, lettuce, tomato. I just wanted something light, nothing fried. This sandwich would be perfect to eat at the beach.

Maluaka Beach
Nestled between Wailea and Makena is Maluaka Beach. I was looking for a beach not far away that will give us the opportunity to snorkel, body board, and skim board. Maluaka fit the bill. It was only 15 minutes away from the condo. We got there right before 11am, and stayed till 1pm. I had fun playing with the kids, both in the sand and in the water. Mommy played photographer, and at times, entertained a few phone calls from friends. During our little break in between, Nancy and I shared the Chicken Salad sandwich from 808 Deli......yummm!!! I can make this back home, and I'll kick it up a notch by adding alfalfa sprouts and apples. I like texture on a sandwich like this one.

Speaking of phone calls
Since I'm on vacation, I decided not to check my work email. However, early this morning, I received a phone call from an unknown number, the caller did not leave a message. It wasn't until noon local time when I reluctantly opened up my work email. Sure enough there was an issue that needed to be handled. Long story short, I made 3 phone calls to make sure the issue got resolved. As much as I didn't want to check my email during vacation, in this instance, I'm glad that I did. The trouble now is keeping myself away from checking my work email for the rest of my vacation. I shall try... I really will.

This foodie will do almost anything
It was around 12:55pm when I turned to Nancy and told her that we should try and go to Sam Sato's in Wailuku. We did have a Costco errand to begin with, so in my mind, we might as well hit 2 birds with one stone. The problem - Sam Sato's closes at 2pm. So we gathered all our beach belongings, walked to the nearest shower, and headed to the parking lot. We left Maluaka Beach close to 1:10pm. The GPS said it'll take us close to

Dry Noodle Double
1/2 hour to get to Sam Sato's. So I drove towards Wailuku and made it to our destination around 1:42pm.  One of the local Auntie's found a spot for our party of 6. She didn't rush us but she suggested we order soon (before 2pm) and we'd be guaranteed to get our food. She looked at our party and gave her recommendation - Dry Noodles Double, 4 Beef BBQ Sticks, and Chicken Yakitori. She said that was plenty enough for us to share. I asked myself, "really???" You don't argue with a local Auntie. I was expecting that we'd be ordering Saimin, my mind was fixed on Saimin (I was thinking of Hamura Saimin - my favorite saimin joint on the island of Kauai). But I had to trust Auntie. Within a few minutes, she came out with one large, as in large bowl of noodles with char siu pork, bean sprouts, and green onion. It came with a small side of broth. In my mind again, "how in the world are
Beef BBQ Sticks
we going to share this soup bowl?" Well, we were told we dip the dry noodle in the broth and go about our business. It was that simple. What I wasn't expecting....the dry noodle was not really dry, it was cooked, and oh-so-al-dente! Auntie gave us 3 little bowls (for me, Ethan, and Nancy). We took some of the noodles, and dipped, and ate. I decided to season my noodle and broth with soy sauce and Tabasco. Wow, that was really good.
Manju - Lima Bean and Azuki
This dry noodle broke da mouth!!!  It's an expression that means, something so tasty,  you want to eat it all once. Auntie also talked to us for a bit, and learned that we'd be exploring Lahaina sometime this weekend. She gave us a few more tips...how cool was she? Way cool!!! When we got ready to pay at the register, we also ordered Manju - Lima Bean and Azuki. It reminds me very much of a Filipino hopia. Aaaahhhh....foodie cravings were definitely satisfied! I'm hoping before we leave the island that we'd get to try Sam Sato's at least 1 more time.

The kids didn't want to go out and swim
After running our Costco errand, we headed back home. The kids were restless, Nancy was on a mission to do laundry, I, on the other hand, had the bug to jump in the water. It was very hot. At first I didn't want to go on my own, but I realized, it's not everyday that I have a choice to swim in Maui? So there....I went by myself,  jumped in the Pacific Ocean. Although I was alone, I made sure to swim close to the crowd. After 20 minutes of being in the water, I headed back to the condo.

Maui sunset photoshoot

It wasn't really an official photoshoot, but we wanted to take pics with the sunset in the background. This has been a favorite tradition whenever we vacation in Hawaii. Pictures of the growing kids and the majestic Hawaiian sunset is an unwritten item that's engraved in the list of things to do.We got to the beach around 6:20pm, and we had about a 1/2 hour to play (or as I would call it...take pictures). As you could imagine, we took hundreds of pictures of the kids and the sunset. Nancy and I took turns as their
photographer, and there were a couple of times when strangers approached us to  take our family picture.....mahalo to them. Before, during and after we took pictures, my kids who didn't want to swim with Daddy earlier, decided to jump in and play in the water. Go figure! Of course, I had to pretend that Daddy was hurt, they knew that I was just joking. After leaving the beach, it was already dark, and the kids still didn't get enough of water playtime and so we stopped at the pool and swam some more. Why not....they're on vacation after all.

That's Day 5 - somewhat laid back. It was still a fun-filled day. For a change, Nancy cooked tonight, a comfort food....chicken sopas (aka chicken noodle soup). That was a perfect end to our Day.....goodnight and mahalo for following us.

Low-key...Kihei - Maui Day 4

Day Four
After a truly exhausting day of exploring the Road to Hana, we decided to keep Day 4 as low-key as possible. You be the judge.

Didn't mean to stop here for breakfast
I woke up early, and asked Madison to come with me to the store. I planned to cook and needed a few things. We also planned to get malasadas, so that was the other reason for getting up early. On our
way to Foodland, I saw Kihei Caffe and I decided to take a quick peek. I didn't really look at the menu, instead I went straight to the register and I saw these gigantic cinnamon rolls. The guy at the counter described them to me and allowed me to take pictures of it, I told him I wanted to get an idea what to eat at this restaurant. The rolls were covered but I can feel the warm heat, and it's aroma. Right then and there, I changed my mind and ordered the Cinnamon Roll with Macadamia Nut Frosting topped with Mac Nuts. I caved and did not regret it. Directly after going to Kihei Caffe, I stopped by Home Maid Bakery again to pick up freshly-made malasadas.

Why the desire to cook?
Home (condo) made spaghetti with fresh basil and parsley
Yesterday, as we were leaving for Hana, one of the kids found an herb garden outside the condo grounds. I saw the herbs that I love using - basil, rosemary, parsley, and cilantro. There were a few more but I just didn't know which ones they were. So I knew that I'd be going back to this garden and create a little meal for the family. It's a simple dish really....just spaghetti. I like using fresh basil when I make the red sauce. Right before serving the spaghetti, I garnished it with fresh basil and parsley. The herbs add a hint of freshness and my kids dig it.

From Skateboard to Skimboard
Ethan skimboards at Kamaole Beach III
As I mentioned earlier, we wanted to keep it low-key so the rest of the morning and early afternoon was spent right across the street from our condo...Kamaole Beach III. I really enjoy having this access directly across from us. For the past 2-3 times we've gone here this week, this beach was never crowded. The difference this morning? The waves were stronger, there was a shore break warning so we had to proceed with caution.
Another Poke creation from Foodland
As expected, Ethan, Madison, and I jumped in the water. We took turns using the body board. Ethan also enjoyed using a skimboard that was provided by our condo owner. I tried to get on and am proud to say that I failed. So there! LOL.....Madison tried as well, and will continue to try until she's confident enough to master the skimboard. Nancy enjoyed relaxing just by sitting under the umbrella and lounged on the beach chair as she watched Evan and Caitlin play with the sand. I also ate poke I purchased from Foodland. It was their Ahi Wasabi Oyster Sauce Shoyu Poke, literally a mouthful. Foodland offers a variety of poke and I'm gonna have to try as many as I could before leaving the island. After 2 hours of playing at the beach, the 2 little ones asked if we could go to the pool. Why not? We packed our things and walked back to the condo and jumped in the pool. Now, everyone's happy. By the way, here's a funny tidbit while Ethan was waiting to catch a wave. He was mistaken for a local (with us being Filipino and all, we're not surprised). "We really need to get to Kailua in an hour. How far is it from Kihei?" My poor son replied, "I think you're on the wrong island."

Early afternoon meal
Kalua Pork Nachos
We found ourselves craving something cold so we went to Maui Gelato, and had shave ice at Local Boys on S. Kihei Road. Within the same compound was Three's Bar and Grill. We ordered Kalua Pork Nachos, Tekka Maki, and Salmon Avocado Roll. The highlight was the nachos and the star was the kalua pork....so tender, flavorful, blended perfectly with the Thai basil guacamole, pepperjack cheese, and truffle lime aioli. That was enough to keep us going.
Local Boys Shave Ice

Iao Valley
Honoapiilani Hwy towards Wailuku - love the trees!
We drove towards Wailuku, and the GPS routed me towards Hwy 30 (Honoapiilani Hwy). I really enjoyed this drive....why? It was paved and straight! LOL. Kidding aside, I liked the trees lined up on the side of the road. They almost gave an impression of an umbrella effect which I thought was pretty cool. We pushed forward and found ourselves in Iao Valley. Again, I've been here, but I had forgotten the drive towards this valley. I'm really glad that I'm documenting this experience. It was already late in the day when we got to Iao Valley (around 5:30pm and the park was scheduled to close at 7pm). After using the self-parking machine, we started to walk around. It was hard not to ignore the gushing stream of water. We then decided to make our way closer to the stream and found a good spot to take numerous pics of the kids and our entire family. By the time we finished, it was already getting dark and it was time to leave the peaceful, Iao Valley.

Off the beaten path find
We started to venture towards Kahului but shortly after leaving Iao Valley, I noticed a brightly lit establishment. There were quite a few locals so I decided to stop by. It was Ba Le Sandwich and Plate Lunch, a little Vietnamese outdoor restaurant (not sure if I can really call it a restaurant). You walk up to the outdoor counter, and you have a choice to eat at one of the benches, or take your food with you. I guess it is a restaurant hahahaahaha!                           We love Pho and with all the the plate lunches we've been having on the island, we needed a break. I asked the lady at the counter which Pho she recommended, and she said, "the special pho with flank steak, beef tendon, and meatballs." So we ordered that pho and kalbi ribs plate for the kids. The Pho was exactly what we needed. It was served piping hot. The basil, jalapeƱo, and bean sprouts that came with it were uber fresh. The soup was savory. The bowl was big enough for us to share and we enjoyed every last ounce of that soup. We didn't try anything else. I also found out that there are other Ba Le locations in Hawaii, so the next time I see one, I'll make sure to not shy away and give it a try.

So there, that's Day Four....low-key much? You be the judge! Mahalo for following our journey.

The Long & Winding Road that is Hana - Maui Day Three

Links to:
Day One
Day Two
At the end of our Day Two, we all decided that we’d spend Day Three by exploring Hana. I was the only one in the family who had the opportunity to drive the Road To Hana (RTH) back in 1997 (nearly 20 years ago). Driving the RTH is not about getting to Hana, but the journey as you make your way towards Hana. I had an idea what to expect (so I thought), which was why I told the family that we should leave our condo in Kihei around 6am (fat chance)!

So much for leaving at 6am
I got up at 5am, and Nancy got up 1/2 hour later. We didn’t realize how tired we were from the day before when we explored Makena and Kihei. So on the morning of Day Three, that was when we just started to prepare for our all-day road trip. We had to pack, got the kids in the shower, prepare/serve/eat breakfast, etc. You know the drill, I’m sure.I also had to cook a quick lunch meal - just beef marinated in soy sauce with grilled onions served over white/brown rice. That was meant for us to eat on the road (well, again, we tried….”some” of us (like myself), ate “some” of it for breakfast)! The 6am plan fizzled, instead we left close to 9am. Well, I gotta say that "hey, at least  we tried to leave at 6am."

Our Plan A and Plan B
Plan A - Although we started late, and since we had 9 days on Maui, Nancy and I decided to go to Hana anyway, and see how far we could drive today, and if we decide to head back home halfway in between, we could do so and just return some other day. That way we're not rushing ourselves.
Plan B - Go and finish RTH all the way.
I was leaning towards Plan B, but was game to do whatever it takes to visit this side of the island.

On our way to RTH
Since we had to pass by Kahului/Wailuku, I got a bit hungry (surprise, surprise) and decided to look at my foodie bucket list and realized that Stillwell’s Bakery was just a few minutes away. So we did a quick detour and headed over to Stillwell’s in Wailuku. I asked the lady at the counter what would she recommend? She said the Cream Horn (Puff pastry with custard and chocolate filling), and their Banana Cream Pie. We enjoyed both desserts. The pie had these big chunks of fresh bananas too. It was delicious. The cream horn was flaky, had a good crunch to it, and the cream was just right, not too sweet. Ok, so foodie craving was satisfied. Oh yeah....back on the road again. It was already past 10am when we finally made the trek leaving Wailuku towards the RTH. A little too late in my books.

The weather at this time of day was cloudy with visible signs that these were gray cloudy rain clouds. But it's Hawaii. I did expect it to rain a bit, and I explained to the kids that Hawaii rain typically lasts for a few minutes. So I proceeded towards the RTH.

If I only had a dollar.....
For every time the kids asked, "are we there yet?", "where are we going, Daddy?", "how much longer?".....I'd be super rich! Again, I expected to hear all of these questions from the inquiring minds. They tried their best to keep themselves entertained (iPad, Kindle, Spotify, and random questions from mom and dad).

RTH Landmarks

While we had tourist maps, and notes I printed from various websites, I decided to stop wherever I saw a bunch of parked tourist vehicles. That's what happened at Twin Falls, the very first stop. There must've been over 100 cars parked and I said, there had to be something to see here. I don't remember much from the 1997 trip (I should've kept a trip diary - I had no blog then). I don't remember Twin Falls. So, we all got out of the Tahoe, crossed the bridge, and entered the gate towards Twin Falls. It
sprinkled a bit, but we kept moving, Ethan and Madison were ahead, Caitlin and I were paired together, while Nancy had Evan. It was a beautiful rainforest, a great paved trail. There was a point where we actually had to cross a stream to get to the other side. Speaking of rainforest, it did rain.

A nice heavy downpour for about 5 minutes. We took refuge under shady trees, but there was just no escaping the fact that we'd get wet eventually. After a few minutes, the rain ceased, and we walked some more. Not soon after, there it was, Twin Falls. At first, Nancy and Evan stayed from a distance by not getting any closer to the falls. After I made my way closer to the falls, I signaled and told her it was ok to cross. I met them halfway, and in no time, all of us were a few feet away from the falls. The walk/hike took just about over 1 hour roundtrip. We didn't wear sneakers, it was just our Rainbow Sandals that saved the day.

Back to The Long and Winding Road

One of numerous falls we saw off the highway
I don't think the Beatles wrote this song about the RTH, but it was quite appropriate. All I kept thinking were the 600 curves/turns, and the over 50 bridges we had to cross. There were so many waterfalls in between that I simply lost track as to which waterfall was right in front of us. We did stop at the Halfway to Hana store. We had to get out and stretch for a bit. Ethan ordered shave ice, while Nancy and I shared a warm banana bread that just came out of the oven. Oh my!

Better than the Ice Bucket Challenge
Not long after, we found ourselves in  WaiŹ»anapanapa State Park. First, we went towards the cave. Again, I don't think I went here in 1997. I would've remembered and here's why. I didn't see a cave then. What was in the cave? A handful of tourists swimming, screaming, yet enjoying their time. Madison jumped in and she did just the same. She said, "Cold!!!!' So I made my way down, and my kids and the tourists told me to just do it and jump. So I did......brrrrrr!!!! Now that's better than the Ice Bucket Challenge. The water was ice cold. I gotta tell you, jumping in that pool of
Glorious Black Sand Beach
your ice-ness was the break we needed from The Long and Winding Road. It sure woke me up. It woke up my senses. Not long after, Ethan jumped and joined. The 2 kids jumped in again, and again....it was that fun!!! After a few minutes of playing in this cave ice bucket, we walked out and headed down to Black Sand Beach. It was just picture perfect. It was packed with tourists, but the beach was big enough to accommodate the crowd.

There was no more turning back...Plan B it is
It was already past 4pm and there was just no way we'd be turning back now. So after leaving Wai'napanapa, we finally arrived at Hana. We were very hungry at this point. We stopped at Braddah Hutts BBQ a food truck off to the side of the road. We ordered the most delicious BBQ Chicken and Grilled Steak. We were on a mission to eat fast because at this point, we've not even seen the Seven Sacred Pools yet, considered one of the highlights when you drive the RTH. So we did what we could to eat quickly, but it was just wrong to do so. The chicken and steak were flavorful, and I was not expecting that from this little shack. It was amazing. Another family next to us enjoyed watching us devour our food. Hahahahahaha I don't blame them.
BBQ Chicken - Braddah Hutts

Pools of O'heo (aka Seven Sacred Pools)
Lower Pools at O'heo Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools)

We arrived at O'heo Gulch around 5:30pm. I knew that I wanted us to at least see the pools. This would be our very last stop, and the plan was to take the back road leaving Hana. We all made our way down to the pools, took a few good pictures with the kids. Nancy then decided to take Evan and Caitlin back up to the car, while I stayed with Ethan and Madison. We played in one of the pools. Definitely much warmer and cooler than the icy water from the cav
e earlier. It was fun jumping in the water with my kids, I'm also just glad they know how to swim. Not long after, we decided to get out and leave the pools. I was left behind since I couldn't find my Rainbow Sandals. After a few minutes of searching, I found it. I started to rush, not a good idea. My left foot slipped on one of the moss-covered rocks, and at that moment, it felt like the longest 2-3 seconds of my life. I thought I broke something or that my foot would get stuck. Thankfully, none of that. No wound, nothing. Just a little bruise and I'm sure I'll survive,

The Back Road
Orange-colored sky on our drive home from Hana
When I took the back road before, I do remember the "rocky road" and then I remember ending up in some nice residential area. That's what I was expecting. After leaving the Seven Sacred Pools, we were back on the winding road, lots of rocky areas. Just imagine yourself sitting at a Brookstone and sitting on one of those massage chairs....it was rockyI Did I have appreciation for paved roads the moment we left the rocky/unpaved areas? You bet. As we drove out further, I thought' we'd end up somewhere in Makena/Wailea area....but that was just too good to be true. The road took us to a long stretch of 1 to 2 skinny lane paved highways, via cattle farms, and near the foot of Haleakala. It was a long way home (probably took us close to 2 hour). We got home past 9pm, and as you might imagine, we were exhausted. I am just glad that we did the RTH and with 4 kids in tow, we tried to take in as much as we could with so little time. Road to Hana is now crossed off our Maui bucket list.

TOR-TEE-TA
What kept us entertained? The kids of course. Caitlin had a craving for chips, so she asked for "TORTATO" chips (we thought she wanted Potato chips).  Come to find out she was referring to TORTILLA chips. She couldn't pronounce TORTILLA (pronounced TOR-TEE-YAH), instead, she kept saying TOR-TEE-TA. That took about 15 minutes which gave us a good comic relief during this strenuous drive.

Ok....that was the very exhausting, yet rewarding Day 3....good night....and mahalo for following our journey.

The Trouble with Time Change
Since I started my new job, the projects that have been assigned to me, a West Coast guy, have all been focused on the East Coast (3 hours ahead). This means that I start my days very, very early....we're talking 5am California time. I actually don't mind getting up in the wee hours of the morning, I feel like I get a lot of things accomplished from a work-perspective, and when the day ends for my East Coast counterparts, I still have the rest of the afternoon to work or take care of other important things. Now that we're on Maui, I have to do the reverse since Hawaii time is 3 hours behind my time in California. Since we were exhausted yesterday, we did have a good night's rest, but I still got up at 3am (Hawaii local time). Go figure! I tried to go back to bed, and failed. It could be worse. Well, that was the time I wrote my blog from Day One.

Why I blog...

Many of my friends have suggested that I write a blog. I obviously post a lot on Facebook/Instagram, and they said, "you might as well write a blog" - so I did. For our vacations/getaways, I write after-hours, when it's quiet, when all are asleep. Writing feels like therapy. It's good for me and my memory (I'm not getting any younger). I've also shared my past blogs to friends who wanted to find out what we did when we went to XYZ place. Lastly, the family and I, during our downtime, we like to look back and recall the events that took place when the blog was written. So there....that's why I blog. I rarely tweet, but if you want to follow me on Instagram, follow me at @mac4daddy.

Maui-sadas

Breakfast Moco
After writing my blog, I finally had the nerve to wake up my family (gently). It was around 6am local time. Hey, that was 9am back home. I was able to convince Madison to come with me to Home Maid Bakery. It was only under 3 miles away, but with a 2-lane Kihei Road, it took us around 10 mins to get there. I've had malasadas on Oahu (Leonard's and Agnes Portuguese Bakery) and Kauai (I think it was from the Malasada Lady outside K-mart). According to the oh-so-reliable Wikipedia, a malasada is a Portuguese confection, made of egg-sized balls of yeast dough that are deep-fried in oil and coated with granulated sugar. In plain English, it reminds me of a donut with no hole....but it's quite moist, and the flavors are enhanced by the different types of sugar. Home Maid Bakery served 2 kinds...plain sugar and cream (kinda like a warm-custard). It was pretty good, but I'm quite biased. My favorite malasada in Hawaii is from Agnes Portugues Bakery in Kailua... simply the best. Oh, I also ordered the Breakfast Moco, egg, rice, burger patty and gravy. That hit the spot.

Beachfront access

When I booked this condo 3 weeks ago, it received 5-star reviews from previous guests  who booked using VRBO. Was it too good to believe? No one rated the place under 5-stars? I had to see it for myself. For today's entry, I'll share with you that we're probably close to 100 yards from the beach....just enough for me to use my 9-iron to get to the hole (I haven't played golf in so long). That's how close this condo is to the beach. It's not beachfront per se. To get there, we had to cross a 2-lane road, and voila, we're at Kamaole Beach III's parking lot. With just a few more steps, we passed by the restroom facilities, outdoor shower, playground, a wooden ramp, and then, the golden sand. The picture shows the property...it's the downward L-shaped looking property that's facing the ocean.

ALS Challenge and our morning at Kamaole Beach III
Ethan was challenged by his friend, Jackson, to take the ALS Challenge where he had to pour a bucket of iced water. Since we had no access to a bucket, we found a mixing bowl in our kitchen, and that's what we used. We shot his video at Kamaole Beach III...click here for the short clip.
Ahi Limu Poke
After that, we just spent the rest of the morning swimming, riding the waves via body board and skim board. Caitlin and Evan got in the water but they enjoyed building a sand castle in the shape of a shark, but it had to have windows. Oh kids and their imagination. After spending our morning at the beach, we walked back to the condo, had lunch, and rested for a bit.

Ice, Ice, Baby

We drove toward Ululani's Shave Ice to help cool us down from 90 degree sunny summer day. We were in line for quite a while, so we did what every reasonable parent does (at times). We asked Ethan to stay in line for us!  :-P In the meantime, Nancy and I walked in to Sugar Beach Bake Shop. They're well known for their Lilikoi Key Lime Pie, but we weren't in the mood for a Key Lime flavor, so we opted for their Dossant (Donut-Croissant aka cronuts). I ordered their Dossant with lilikoi berries and cream topped with macadamia nuts. That was very good. For the actual shave ice, I ordered blue hawaii, pineapple, and tiger's blood topped with mochi. For Ethan, mango, passion fruit, and guava. I'm quite picky when it comes to the ice itself. Out of all the shave ice on Oahu, nothing compares to Waiola General Store in Waikiki,  IMHO. But I gotta tell you, Ululani's ice was quite fine, perfectly fine.

Makena Beach

The rest of our afternoon was spent at Makena Beach. The waves, as I remembered them from years ago, were kicking. This is not a good beach for little kids to simply "play" in the water. Caitlin and Evan played in the sand, enjoyed covering themselves in sand. I, on the other hand, played with Ethan and Madison and enjoyed the strength of the waves at Makena.

Not all Candies are bad for you

It was close to dinner time when we decided to leave Makena, and at this time, we got hungry again. I looked at my list of what's near the area, and decided on Eskimo Candy - another local find, somewhat a hole in the wall, off the beaten path in Kihei. I thought it was going to be just seafood type of dishes, but to my surprise, there were many other regular plate lunches. I ordered Coconut Shrimp and Ono combo, the rest of the fam ordered Kalbi Ribs and Teriyaki Chicken. From what I've read, looks like this place is also known for their Poke bowls....since we got there during the day, they ran out of poke....maybe next time.

Coconut Shrimp and Ono Combo

That was our Day Two....I expect Day Three to be quite hectic....stay tuned. Mahalo!
